My Secret Weapon

November 11, 2013

Lipstick can be a tricky beast to master. Do I apply it right out of the tube? Matte or glossy?Should I buy the long-wear formula (and what should I do when I can’t get the darn stuff off)? Lipstick also has the tendency to smear, bleed, and fade throughout the day. I wear bright lipstick at least a few times a week and have finally found the secret to making it look really good (with minimal touch-ups) all day.

My secret weapon: clear lip liner. Like most women, I figured that lip liner was an unnecessary step and skipped it in my daily routine. I thought it was such a chore, not to mention a waste of money, to buy a coordinated lip liner for every lip color I owned. In fact, I didn’t even know clear lip liner existed until my last visit to Sephora.

Like a base coat for your nails, lip liner gives the pigments in the lipstick something to adhere to. Use it to not only line your lips but also fill them in completely (very important!). Lipstick application will be smoother and the color will have extended longevity. By using clear lip liner, your matte lipstick will no longer flake off in patches (anyone who has worn matte lipstick knows what I’m talking about). Also, since the lip liner is colorless, you can use it for every lipstick shade you own! Try it out and let me know what you think, gals!

XO, J

P.S. I apply my lipstick straight from the tube, prefer matte over glossy, and never buy the long-wear formula because I am afraid that it won’t come off!

Nude Nails Are Having a Moment

October 28, 2013

nude nails

Nude nails are having a moment… in my book, anyway! Glossy, nude nails are understated and sexy. They elongate your fingers and make your hands look really elegant. I’m usually pretty adventurous with my nail colors, from midnight blue to my current raspberry pink nails. However, every Sunday afternoon when I do my weekly mani, I struggle to decide between a fun pop of color or the ever-classy nude nail (and lately the nude nail has been my pick).

Here are some of my favorite nude nail colors:

P.S. Nude nails look effortlessly chic paired with dainty gold rings, too.

The Ultimate Fragrance Guide

October 13, 2013

Every women needs a signature scent. Your scent should be uniquely and recognizably you with a fragrance you’ll wear for years. However, with all the fragrance choices out there it can become mind-boggling trying to find the perfect one. To help you in your search I’ve narrowed down my favorites in each category: floral, clean, musky, and fruity. Good luck finding your perfect signature scent!

Floral Fragrances

  1. Flowerbomb by Viktor & Rolf: Girly and playful, this fragrance evokes femininity and sweetness.
  2. Carnal Flower by Dominique Ropion: Complex and enigmatic, it is both fresh and floral and spicy and animalistic.
  3. Romance by Ralph Lauren : Classic and beautiful, this fragrance has notes of Sungoddess rose and chamomile.
  4. Field of Flowers Orange Blossom by Philosophy: Fresh and floral with hints of uplifting citrus.

Clean Fragrances

  1. Bianca by Tocca: Fresh bergamot and lavender make this perfume an everyday classic.
  2. CLEAN Original by CLEAN: Like stepping out of a shower, this fragrance smells squeaky clean.
  3. Pure Grace by Philosophy: The epitome of clean, crisp, and sensual.
  4. Rose 4 Reines by L’Occitane: Don’t be fooled by the floral name, this fragrance is light and fresh with hints of rose.

Musky Fragrances

  1. Coco by Chanel: Elegant and sophisticated. Those who wear it, wear it for life.
  2. J’Adore by Dior: Intoxicating, addicting, and so sensual.
  3. Premiere by Gucci: Powerful and glamorous. Timeless and alluring.
  4. White Musk by The Body Shop : A velvety, classic musk scent for everyday.

Fruity Fragrances

  1. Brit by Burberry: Notes of Italian lime, white peony, and vanilla make this fragrance sexy, crisp, and unexpected.
  2. Chloe by Chloe: A chic and romantic fragrance, with sweet notes of lychee.
  3. Miss Dior by Dior: Sweetly seductive, this fragrance is an instant classic.
  4. Nectarine Blossom & Honey by Jo Malone: Sweet nectarine and peach with hints of plum and blackcurrant combine with the warmth of honey in this fragrance.

What’s your signature scent? I’d love to know!

XO, J

P.S. Eau de Parfum is a stronger concentration of the fragrance and has more staying power than Eau de Toilette. Expect a bottle of Eau de Parfum to be more expensive but also last much longer (both on the skin and in the bottle) than Eau de Toilette.

A Quick Beauty Trick: Bright Eyes

October 7, 2013

Even if you didn’t get a tight 12 hours last night (any Jim Gaffigan fans?) you can fake it with this quick beauty trick! Take a waterproof eyeliner pencil in nude/your skin tone (I bought this one from Sephora in Infinite Beige and it’s awesome) and tightline your bottom rims only. I’ve heard of makeup artists doing this trick using a white eyeliner pencil but I personally find white a bit too harsh. Many women have a habit of tightlining their eyes in black, making their eyes appear smaller. This optical illusion does the opposite and makes your eyes seem bigger while awakening your entire face. Pretty cool. Try it out and let me know what you think!

3 Lip Colors to Try This Fall

September 23, 2013

Yesterday marked the first full day of fall. Fall, to me, is so bittersweet; I’m sad to see summer go, but I’m ready for cozy sweaters, apple picking, and leaf peeping! New England is truly beautiful during the fall. If you’re ready to put away your bright pink summery lipstick and try out some moodier colors, look no further! Here are fall 2013’s biggest lip color trends!

MAC So Chaud PS

M.A.C ‘So Chaud‘: By far, the biggest lip color trend this fall is orange lipstick. Orange lips were everywhere during NYFW a few weeks ago! M.A.C. ‘So Chaud’ is a very wearable, orange-y/coral lip color that is flattering on a variety of skin tones. Also, the matte finish makes it ultra-cool. Pair it with black winged eyeliner for a retro look.

Covergirl divine PS

Covergirl ‘Divine‘: I’ll be wearing this lipstick a ton this fall, I guarantee it. Don’t be scared of this unusual color because it is truly stunning on your lips. After applying it, blot it off gently with a tissue because it leaves the most gorgeous berry, dark fuchsia stain. Apply a second coat and blot again.

Revlon black cherry PS

Revlon ‘Black Cherry‘: Oxblood lips were big last fall and they’re back again this year! To pull off a dark red lip (without looking like a vampire), keep the rest of your makeup soft and feminine, with plush lashes and peach cheeks. Go easy on the foundation and powder because you want to keep your skin looking natural and dewy (not washed out). Make sure you bring the tube with you for touch-ups throughout the day!

Which lip color trend will you rock this fall?

XO, J

P.S. I’m wearing Covergirl ‘Divine’ in my About Me photo!
