A Quick Beauty Trick: Sleek Hair

March 10, 2014

In my never-ending quest for frizz free hair, I’ve stumbled across a quick trick for a sleeker mane. Next time you wash your hair, instead of wrapping your wet hair up in a terry cloth towel, try a regular cotton t-shirt. Unless your mom was super savvy, she probably taught you to roughly rub the towel over your hair and then twirl it into a turban quick tip curlson top of your head. However, your hair is actually a very delicate fiber, and should be treated like an antique lace or luxurious cashmere. Your wouldn’t rough up your best cashmere sweater, would you?! To prevent frizz and breakage, gently wrap your wet hair up in an old cotton t-shirt, which is actually much more absorbent than a terry cloth towel. Gently pat and squeeze out the excess water and never rub your wet hair. This allows the cuticle of the hair to remain sealed and flat, which will make your hair appear shinier and sleeker. Curly girls, try it out for perfect, frizz free curls!

SF Updates!

March 7, 2014

It’s kind of crazy how you can uproot yourself, move across the country, and start a new life and get into a routine so quickly. This past week I started a new job and I’ve already quickly fallen into the 9-5 pattern. Is it weird that I already see the same people riding the train every morning?

A couple weekends ago we went down to the beach, which is about a mile away from our apartment. We were walking in the ocean… in February! The waves were incredible and they made me want to take up surfing. Gotta work on my balance first.

Sawyer and I have been on a mission to find the best burrito in the Mission. The burritos we’ve had have been pretty good, but we’ve yet to find our favorite. We’re already planning on trying a new place with new friends tomorrow afternoon!

Channeled my inner Connie Nielsen for another job interview. Got the job AND got asked out on a date by a stranger while I was walking home (confidence boost!). I only accepted one offer. ;)

Came home from the interview and rolled around on the floor with Buddy. My entirely black outfit was entirely orange.

Got to see these lovely little ladies and spent some time in Alamo Square on a pretty Saturday afternoon.

A coffee and chocolate croissant are the best remedy for gloomy SF days.

Our burrito search lead us to Taqueria El Castillito last weekend. I had the zapata burrito and he had the regular, and we shared an agua fresca. He liked his burrito more than I liked mine. Ready to try another place this weekend!

Ageless Beauty

March 3, 2014

There’s the old saying that “beauty fades,” but some women certainly only get more beautiful with age. Taking care of yourself when you’re young plays a huge part in how you’ll look when you’re older. As a young woman in today’s society, it can be easy to become bombarded by the media telling us how we should look. Take it from these women, though – looking young doesn’t have to involve surgery and injectables. These 9 women have aged gracefully and are more beautiful now than they ever were. If I could look half as good as these women one day, I’ll be thrilled!

in her 40s

Faith Hill, 46; Connie Britton, 46; Connie Nielsen, 48.

in her 50s

Jerry Hall, 57; Julianne Moore, 53; Vanessa Williams, 50.

in her 60s

Jessica Lange, 64; Norma Kamali, 68; Bonnie Raitt, 64.

How amazing do these women look? I’ll have what she’s having!

how to use a spiral bobby pinEver seen one of these before? I discovered them a little while ago and they seemed like a secret too good not to share. It only takes one of these little guys to hold my topknot all day. As a gal with thick hair, I’ve always had issues with regular bobby pins popping out of my hair midday (so. annoying.). With this awesome spiral bobby pin, I never have to worry that I’m sporting a sweet rat tail. Here’s how to use ’em!

Ponytail

Secure your hair in a ponytail. I like to wear my topknot high but the pins work well for low buns and chignons, too. Second or third day hair works well for this kind of style.

putting it up

Gather your hair into a bun. You can make it tight or loose – either way, the bobby pin will hold! I chose to make mine a little loose and messy. Twist the spiral into the bun horizontally right where you’re holding the ends of your hair. Make sure, while twisting it in, to grab some hair close to the scalp to anchor it in place.

all done!

That’s it! Super easy and your bun will last all day. The package comes with two spiral bobby pins, so feel free to anchor your topknot with another one if it feels too loose (twisting in from the opposite side).

P.S. My thin gold rings were a recent H&M find. I couldn’t resist! ;)
